Vodality Series Firmware

To install the latest version of SignControl Advanced on your Vodality Series devices, follow these instructions:

  1. Download the latest firmware from this link: fm246.zip 98319176 bytes
  2. Unzip the zip file to a place you can find, such as your Desktop. In the extracted folder you should find two files:
    DSSImage201001031_246.bin 91362560 bytes
    DSSImage202001031_246.bin 91362560 bytes
  3. You only need the .bin file that corresponds to your device. Which one to use depends on the first three digits (201 or 202) which you will find on your device in the Basic Screen of the Menu system. With your device on, push the Menu button on your remote. If you see icons, press left or right arrow keys until you get to Advanced and press OK. If you don't see icons, you should already see a column of buttons with Basic as the top center selected one. Press Basic to enter the Basic screen. The top field shows the current firmware number. Match the first three digits (either 201 or 202).
  4. Insert a USB stick into your computer formatted as FAT32 with enough free space
  5. Copy the .bin file you need, or you can copy both and select the correct one at installation time. Paste the file/s into the USB stick. Note that the .bin files cannot be in a folder on the USB stick. They must be in top most directory on your USB stick.
  6. Correctly remove your USB stick from your computer and put it into your device
  7. Go to the Basic screen on your device, select Upgrade. You should see the .bin files.
  8. Select the correct bin file, as noted above and click OK. Then click Yes to install.
  9. Installation should take 4-10 minutes. Do not interrupt the process. It is recommended that you use a Backup Battery during installation in case there is a power outage or power glitch during the installation. If the installation were to fail, the device can be fixed by Vodality, LLC.
  10. Newer firmware reboots twice. Do not interrupt the installation and do not remove the USB stick until either the Presentation currenly on the device starts playing, or the device begins to respond to the remote control again.
  11. When all is done, return to the Basic screen to see your new firmware version. It should now end with _246, or whatever version you updated the device to.

Note that in the unlikely event that your current firmware has a number below _135 (note the underscore coming before that three digit number) then you cannot use this firmware upgrade process, but must ship the device to Vodality, LLC. to upgrade. This situation is uncommon.

Now your device should be up and running SignControl Advanced.
Note: The firmware version shown on the device will be:
"201001031_246" for VC1040/VC1040r, VC1500/VC1500r, VC1900/VC1900r, VC2200/VC2200r/VC2200rb, VC3200/VC3200r, VC4200/VC4200r, VC5500/VC5500r, VC6000/VC6000r, VC6500/VC6500r, VC7000/VC7000r, VC8000/VC8000r
"202001031_246" for VC641 and VC641GPS External Media Player
If you select the wrong binary for your device or that binary has already been installed, the app will not upgrade to it.

Note: If your device has problems mounting the SD Card, you must power the device down and remove and reinsert the SD Card. Some devices need to be taken apart to do this. Also, the firmware upgrade must be able to mount the SD Card. So if you notice that you get a message on screen that it cannot mount the SD Card, do not upgrade the firmware until your SD Card can be mounted again.

Version '_246' features a new field in SignControl WAN for entering in a server alternative to signcontrol.net. SignControl.net remains the default value for that field, but now users can license signcontrol to run on their own private servers, and this firmware allows for that option. The value to enter into that server field can be found at the top of the main home page after logging into signcontrol with the Legacy SignControl checkbox selected.

Version '_244' fixes a memory leak. Upgrade recommended.

Version '_243' corrects Message and Clock color bugs, and allows playing content not through SignControl.net. Contact it@vodality.com with subject "Firmware 243 non-signcontrol mode" for details. See also Basic Instrutions for non-signcontrol mode.

Version '_242' auto deletes unused media on SD Card when running SignControl Advanced (The current website).

Version '_241' fixes a bug for SignControl so that "Wipe SD Clean" now clears the media cache to reduce unnecessary downloading when pushing "Play" after wiping SD Card clean.

Version '_240' fixes a Sunday crashing bug for advanced presentations scheduling system. It also removes some bugs in the incremental video downloads process.

Version '_229' enables using the new advanced signcontrol website. This is the current website that you go to when you click Login on the home page of signcontrol.net. For legacy signcontrol, there is a link to that at the bottom of the home page. Legacy signcontrol is still working, but is deprecated, and you are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version. However, some older products of Vodality cannot be upgraded to use the new advanced signcontrol, so for those products, you may use legacy signcontrol, which will continue to work just as before. Both versions of signcontrol use the same login authentication.

Version '_211' enables empty network passwords so that you may connect to open networks that require no passwords. Previously, a password was required to make a connection.

Version '_208' introduces incremental downloading of videos, which allows very large videos to be downloaded. While videos are being downloaded, each video's percentage of progress is displayed on the device.

Version '_191' features a new menu system above the previous menu system to make it easier to understand, along with a few bug fixes and optimizations.

Version '_183' fixes bug where menu could be up while presentation was playing if menu button was pushed right after booting up. This bug is fixed.

Version '_179' adds the ability to use dark scheduling on your digital signs from signcontrol.net settings. In addition to being able to fine tune exactly when your signs go dark and come back on, you can also awake them from darkness (this is a reboot) from the cloud through your signcontrol.net account by changing the dark schedule and resaving it. This works because, if WiFi internet access is available, the digital signs will continute to poll the server every two minutes, refreshing its downloaded dark schedule.

Version '_156' includes the ability to scan for all wifi networks. This feature is in the WLAN menu page and requires the LAN to be set to Disable (in the LAN menu page) and the WLAN to be set to Enable (in the WLAN menu page). In WLAN, click "List Networks", and within seconds a select box will be populated with all scanned networks, allowing you to select one without typing in the SSID.

  2. (Note the SD Card must be formatted as FAT (MS-DOS FAT16).)
(Also note that the SD Card must be no larger than 2GB in size or it will not work.)
(This new release has been greatly optimized as an official Release version.)
    SignControlRelease3_3_0_4.zip 20,104,649 bytes (19634 KB)

  6. When the progress bar disappears, and you see the Windows CE Logo, the installation is completed.
  7. Shut down the device and remove the SD Card. (Make sure you remove the SD Card at this point or it will reinstall.)
  8. With the SD Card removed, turn the device back on, and it should run with the latest version of SignControl.
